Wow! You're Sally from Death Valley??? My name is Gronk, I'm an
old friend of KJD (getting old myself these days ...) Would love to
meet you, do you live in London? That's one of my favourite poems
of Anno's, it goes through my head so much. What's the story
behind it? |

I got "Who said the race is over" this weekend.
It's a great collection.
It was so strange to read my poem! I feel truly privileged.
Thank you for putting them all together, and for keeping the site going.

This poster doesn't know Kades any more than she knows Anno...but i believe he is an artist of broken cry and light and his world is but a touch at far-off blood, leaving wonder and tears behind the eyes... Life and world changing like all artists and he is unique in the truth and prayer.
...and all the more exciting to hear him and Anno crossing with paths that are already one. That poem can take one within the heart breaking/healing moment of Anno’s Ashes spreading in seperate/same directions into the mountain blue sky after the rocket…and the echoing songs closing/opening of the year of years for a being in space and time…
Bless you, Kades |

Just got this email from Kades in Nairobi:
Hope u r all still fine. Am ok though there has been high tension and attacks in the adjacent Mathare [slum] causing kavok en resulting in 2 deaths at Kosovo - the place where we shot Lulu's film. Irosh is fine. We are living together with him and Kamingi at my place. The fights are as a result of sect adherents going by the name of Mungiki. ...
The Ghetto Radio website has this to say about the Mungiki: "The one religious movement in Mathare is called Mungiki, which means ‘majority’ in the Kikuyu language. This cult, which began before Kenya was colonised, helped Kenyata to win the war of independence. Some here still try to follow this ancient way of life, sticking to ancient rituals that include female circumcision, religious beliefs and warrior rituals. And, like Mau Mau fighters, dreadlocks are grown for convenience, not for Rastafarian beliefs.
Kades then adds a poem he's just written, called The Rise:
Life is a hot smoke belching from a thermo flask,
and when softly blown it staggers
as it struggles to rise.
The dire need to join the calm clouds,
and the sly sky.
Like the smoke, my life rises to heaven
where the sky and the clouds dwell,
to meet Mum, Anno, Machera,
and my ever-growing, endless list.
I slip in a heavy sleep...
beside them all, I will lie.
Say hi to everyone. Kades. |

Yes, I'm afraid Teabag finally decided she'd had enough.... and
what a way to go - peacefully in her sleep in Ned's room (that
indeed used to be Anno's). Dear Linda kindly said we could bury
her in the garden at Hawthorne Lodge and Nick heroically took on
grave digger duty (and has the most enormous bruise on his hand
to prove it!). We found her a beautiful spot, surrounded by pretty
blue flowers and sent her on her way wrapped in her favourite
blanket with her pills and a tin of her very expensive (but
apparently very delicious) food.
Iverna Court is a quieter place without her - no more midnight
yowling and no more purring alarm clock in the morning. We're all
going to miss her terribly.

O, not my darling Teabag! No woman could ever be half as faithful
and loving as Teabag. Many nights did she spend lying next to me
providing that extra little bit of warmth as the frozen air pushed its
way past the window pane in the old train room.
You shall be sorely missed Teabag. I'm glad I came back to London
to see you not too long ago even though you hadn't the time of day
for me then. If only my true love wasn't a cat!

Anno's cat (Teabag) died today, at a ripe 19 years old. Although she was officilly "Anno's" (she was given to him when he was about 7), Lissy (typically) had to bare the brunt of cleaning cat litters and opening tins of food, as well as administering love when it was demanded and putting up with Teabag treading on her pillow in the mornings.
Still, I'm sure Anno would be sad today. He used to complain that Teabag liked Billy more than him; indeed if you're reading this Billy spare a thought for the passing of one of your oldest admirers!
Despite her incessant meaowing at all hours of the night (a symptom of her aged brain), she was much loved right up to the end.
Another break with the past, and the final end of an era for me and I imagine quite a few others. The (albeit belated) end to the 'Marbles and Teabag' stories.
R.I.P. Teabag, we'll miss you. |
