I read and re-read Karen's message on the KjD site about Victor. So sorry. Because I never knew him, I can not say the words, “Victor, we'll never forget you.” but because of all of you and Anno, I can hear them. And even when you DO really know someone, how a new tao it becomes when “the morrow brings,” and how much is discovered without beginning or end…like your voyages with Anno began twice upon a time 5 and so years ago. Such a rebirth. Victor's grandmother’s cry sings like night near the equator, and I want to dream about his colors…the spirit can feel just as Anno’s race. All the creatures…all the stars…the children’s paintings…

Quote from Sally, the head of St John's School with regard to Victor.... "The art project gave him pride and dignity before he died.Thank you." Thank YOU, Karen and Marie for giving him that. We are all so glad he died with the knowlegdge that he was indeed an artist - and will be remebered as one. We will be having an exhibition of all the kids work on Anno's Africa and will dedicate it to Victor. And Anno, Alberto and Lee - take care of him. x x x

What a beautiful memorial to Victor Otieno, a boy who might otherwise have disappeared without trace had it not been for Karen's words and Anno's Africa. Is there any chance we can see some of his art work?

Victor Otieno just died. He was sixteen years old, lived in Majengo and was at every single Anno's Africa art class. You couldn't really tell he was sick apart from one day when he was very quiet and wouldn't tell anyone what the matter was. I think he must have been in a lot of pain but he was so brave about it, you wouldn't have known at all, he just wasn't his usual self. He worked so hard in class and we were really proud of him and it's just very difficult to believe that he got sick and died so quickly from something that could have been prevented if only he'd had access to the proper medical care we take for granted in the West.
In his interview, Victor said that there was not enough food or water at home but nevertheless his hopes for the future were to continue with his education and go to college and then start his own business. He made some really great paintings and mono-prints and had a lot of talent. He thought his own best qualities were “helping needy people and helping classmates in school” - and his worst qualities “disobeying his teachers and using bad language”. He said that what he'd learnt from the art lessons was an appreciation of art and other people's drawings and how to make great work using lots of colour.
We hear that his Grandmother keeps crying when she remembers that he was awarded a certificate in the art class "That means my grandson was an artist."
Victor, we'll never forget you.

Billy, hear the canon's roar! So much hoping you'll be able to make it over to the UK this summer when Kades comes too, and we can work on "Majengo Nights" !!

Back in London -- feeling rather bereft after the Anno's Africa programme, remembering the faces of the kids on the day I left - and their trust that we will go back - as indeed we will... We are running an interim programme and are determined to raise the money to return in the autumn. To this end we will be mounting an exhibition of the kids' art work and showing some film of their performances at their open day at a fund raiser in London sometime in early July. I will post a message when the date is confirmed. Meanwhile much love to all the kids at St Johns and The Nest ... and huge thanks and love to the everyone who participated - and to those who gave us their verbal support too! It was such a worth while project - and it will go on -- we promise. Love from MamaBeeee
