I spent today with the parents of a young man who died last
November 18th after a six month battle with cancer. And by all
accounts it was a battle indeed. He was an actor whom I had
photographed - and one of the most beautiful ever to grace my
lens. He was also incredibly charming and modest. I think he
had no notion of the spell he cast on those who met him. His
name is Scott Hampton. He was just 31 and at the point of his
cancer diagnosis he was on the brink of a great career. I met
him only the once and spent two hours in his company but he
left such a strong impression on me that when I heard he had
died I felt a tremendous sadness.... I like to hope that he is now
smiling his glorious smile in some other, alternate universe...
along with our boys. xxx |

A brilliant "TREPAN" night at the Barfly... Congratulations to Gus
and his "helpers". Dr Filth were terrific - and George, a
consumate performer. (The others too of course - but my eye
was drawn to George as I imagined Anno watching his coz from
afar and feeling equally proud.) Then Carnival of Souls -- really
stunning. They create a world- and style - so completely their
own... Original and inspired. Hard to do in this time of such a
glut of bands all trying to be unique. So -- WELL DONE Gus!!
You deserve every success. I am proud to be a supporter of
Trepan... love MamaBeeee xxxxxxxxxx |

| Greatly loving all the new pictures of Anno! I don't know why really, I guess it just feels like I know him that bit better. I think you should put more videos up of the band playing!! That'd be top :D & more weekly fixes too! Make them daily ones! |

Before yesterday, somebody could have said the name "Anno Birkin" to me, or "kicks joy darkness" and I wouldn't have known who they were talking about.
But I impulsively bought "who said the race is over?" purely because of two things: I liked the fact notes from his notebook had been included, and because of the shocking "1980-2001" that shone out like a terrible light from the page. Having been born in 1986 myself, it felt very close to home.
I can honestly say, it is some of the most amazing poetry I have ever read, the type of poetry that hits you in the heart and trembles around your body with your blood. They type of poetry you need to read again and again, like an addiction.
I was intrigued as to what had actually happened to Anno, so came online to find out more about his work and terrible fate. What I have found is something so moving, and so tragic.
Not only has the world lost one of its finest modern day poets, but it has lost an amazingly talented band in kicks joy darkness, and an incredible artist in Lee.
My sympathies go out to the friends and family who knew and loved all of the men, and who will never forget. Although I never knew or saw them, I am glad that I have found them now, even if everything I experience from them can only come through the minds and the mouths of ghosts. We can only but wonder to what heights they could have reached. Although clipped of their progressive potential, may their legacy live on, may their words and music still touch those for years to come.
